Starhotels' commitment to ESG practices

"Our ability to optimise hotel performance, strategise and structure growth in a steady and sustainable way, propels us to strive for ever more ambitious challenges. One of these is to make a difference in the ESG sector, a topic that is becoming increasingly vital from an ethical standpoint in the long-term vision of the hotel industry.”
Elisabetta Fabri, President and CEO Starhotels

Starhotels incorporates the adoption and promotion of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices into its business strategy.

The company firmly believes that environmental sustainability, social responsibility and robust governance are crucial in securing a brighter future for both the business and the wider society. Throughout 2023, Starhotels highlighted its dedication to ethical development by implementing significant measures towards an ecological transition and taking up socially responsible initiatives.

The company has initiated an ambitious long-term investment plan, set for the period 2023-2028, with a financial commitment of 10 million Euros (2 million Euros have been already allocated). This strategy is designed to decrease the Group's total energy usage by over 30% by 2026, showcasing a strong commitment to emission reduction. Starhotels is striving to significantly reduce its environmental impact, with the tangible goal of cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 10,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next three years, thereby improving its carbon footprint.

Starhotels has installed high-energy efficiency heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in all its facilities. Where possible, the company has begun to install solar panels on the roofs of some of its hotels, thus preferring renewable energy sources to power its activities (a prime example is Starhotels E.c.ho. Milano). Finally, in an effort to encourage a circular economy, measures have been put in place to minimise water wastage

Starhotels embraced an effective "plastic-free" approach in 2019. In a mere span of four years, over four million disposable plastic toiletry bottles have been substituted with dispensers crafted from recycled and recyclable materials. These dispensers are filled with high-quality, eco-friendly products that are free from parabens and silicones, and are certified by Ecolabel and Ecocert.

Within the Food & Beverage sector, it has become a standard practice to engage with collaborators and suppliers who advocate for seasonal and local cuisine in our hotel establishments. The Cibrèo Ristorante & Cocktail Bar at Helvetia & Bristol in Florence, along with the Ristorante Orto Green Food & Mood at Starhotels Ec.ho. Milan uphold this commitment. At E.c.ho., using Too Good To Go, the public can pick up kits directly from the hotel restaurant, containing fresh food that would otherwise go to waste.

Finally, the "Be Star Be Green" program by Starhotels represents the company's dedication to environmental sustainability. It encourages not only its employees, but also its guests, to actively engage in adopting increasingly sustainable habits in their daily routines. To this end, Starhotels has specifically devised a ten-point plan featuring a set of guidelines aimed at eliminating waste and optimising the use of its available energy resources.
